The location of Cyprus, at the very eastern end of the Mediterranean see, offers a strategic advantage for studying atmospheric composition: The country is ideally located to document and contrast long-range transported anthropogenic pollution from three continents (Europe, Africa, and West Asia).
Cyprus is also on the edge of the two largest desert regions in the world (Sahara and Middle East), offering insight in dust aerosol composition, properties and transport.
CAO intends to foster research and collaboration in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Region by offering expertise and developing regional networks.
Furthermore, key global networks for the study of climate change and air quality lack measurement in this region of the world. (photo of ICOS / TCCON networks).
