European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP)

The Cooperative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe (unofficially European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme – EMEP) is a programme under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP – signed in 1979) for international co-operation on transboundary (across borders) air pollution issues.

This programme regularly provides governments and other interested bodies under the LRTAP convention with scientific information to support adequate development and policy decisions towards emissions reduction. The programme relies on three main elements: (1) collection of data, (2) measurements of air and precipitation quality and (3) modelling of atmospheric transport and deposition of air pollution.

The scientific effort in EMEP is organized under four different Task Forces: Task Force on Measurements and Modelling (TFMM), Task Force on Emission Inventories and Projections (TFEIP), Task Force on Integrated Assessment Modelling (TFIAM) and Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants (TFHTAP).

The Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory contributes to the measurements of air and precipitation quality at its stations.
