Agia Marina Xyliatou Station (CAO-AMX)

  • The Agia Marina Xyliatou (AMX) station is located at a rural background site in the center of Cyprus, at an elevation of 532 m above sea level. It is positioned near the villages of Agia Marina (~630 inhabitants) and Xyliatos (~150 inhabitants), at the northeastern foothills of the Troodos Mountains.

The surrounding landscape features sparse vegetation, including oak and pine trees along with Maquis-type shrubland. Agricultural areas lie about 4 km to the north, while the closest major urban center is more than 35 km away. This setting ensures minimal influence from local pollution sources, apart from limited vehicle traffic to nearby

Due to its isolated and representative location, the AMX station is well-suited for long-term atmospheric measurements of key air pollutants—both gases and aerosols—that are relevant to climate change and air quality assessments.

  • The CAO-AMX station consists of two 15 m² containers, each fully equipped with electricity, high-speed internet, and air conditioning to support continuous, high-quality atmospheric measurements.

    • One container hosts the permanent in-situ aerosol instrumentation, operated as part of the ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure) network.

    • The second container is dedicated to campaign-based studies and is available to accommodate instruments from visiting research teams.

This modular setup allows for both long-term monitoring and the flexibility to support short-term, intensive measurement campaigns.

    🔗 Real-time data

  • The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance is the national authority responsible for the assessment, monitoring, and reporting of air quality in Cyprus.

At the AMX station, DLI operates a suite of instruments dedicated to long-term air quality monitoring, with data records extending back to 1997.

The following pollutants are continuously measured at the site:

    • Particulate Matter: PM₁₀, PM₂.₅

    • Gaseous Pollutants: O₃, NO, NO₂, SO₂, CO, C₆H₆ (benzene)
